"The lead singers of the popular strolling acoustic group, Los Primos,
produced this CD. Band members join as guests along with other performers.
They've recorded five selections of some of their most requested romantic
ballads to serenade someone on special occasions. While three of these ("Crei,""Las
Maninitas" and "Malaguena") are popular Spanish standards in the area, they
are done exceptionally well and feature both Juan Lucero's and Felipe
Ruibal's warm, rich voices. The two met in 1998 while attending New Mexico
State University in Las Cruces and have played off and on with most of the
other musicians since then.
Lucero says the group's sound reflects what people call the trio romantico-style
popularized in the '40 and '50s in Mexico. Because they use traditional
instruments such as the guitarron (larger bass guitar), requinto(a higher
pitched lea guitar) and the vihuela (the highest pitched guitar) folds often
refer to them as mariachis. But they want people to know that they do not
use trumpets.
They've also included a stirring rendition of an oldies medley sung in
English, with such favorites as "Oh Donna," "Earthe Angel" and a Spanish
rendition of "The still of the Night."
Ruibal's poignant original Spanish song, "Cinco Sentidos," expressed the
sentiment of someone left only with the memories of the five sensed of
someone who's going-- because of life circumstances, such a military duty.
